I'm on vacation!

As the post title says, I'm on vacation! So this will (possibly) be relatively brief today. The best thing I saw on the drive up was a highway bulletin-board ad that read, "Need legal advice? Don't ask us! We're just a bakery!" A++ aversion of expectations, would eat their cinnamon rolls again, lol. (Seriously, soooooo many ads for lawyers. And controlling women's bodies. o.O)

Anyway, here's where I am for this week:

Exchanges due in September/October (enemiestoloversex, cuppajoexhange, Come in a Flash, sexpollenplus, ficinabox, trickortreatex, seasonofdrabbles + mystery pinch-hits and treats + future sign-ups): I am now at 11/15; I got done exactly what I need to last week! 😊 I'm setting myself a goal for nothing this week, because I'll be on vacation the whole time, so I'm very busy hiking and working jigsaw puzzles. Although I am doing a bit of research into something that might turn out to be a treat. I'll be busy next week for sure (especially since there are a couple outstanding pinch-hits that I am the candidate the grab), but I'll worry about that then. If I feel inspired to write anything this week, that's just a surprise bonus!

Exchanges due in November/December (fffx, ficinabox treats, seasonofdrabbles treats, yuletide_admin + mystery pinch-hits and treats + future sign-ups): The only assignment out so far is fffx, so I'm currently at 0/1. I did skip both eatdrinkmakemerry and amperslashexchange. I checked on nominations for seasonofdrabbles and am good there. It looks like I'll have a very light Nov/Dec docket, but I have plans for that!

I did, indeed, get The Tomb of Dragons in time for my trip, and am reading that and enjoying it loads, per usual. Finishing this is one of my few plans for the week!

I haven't hit the top of the hold queue yet for Nona the Ninth, but I still suspect it will crop up this week and there are decent odds I'll finish this, too.

Wen Guan by Qi Xiao Huangshu - I didn't do any reading on this. If Nona doesn't come in before I finish Tomb of Dragons, I'll resume this.

I'm just starting Ch16 of Dear Door, which is proving to be the porny fun I was hoping for, and I'm continuing to read it at my leisure.

BNHA: S8 has started, but I won't see it until post-vacation! And the movies/OVAs continue to be my back-up treat

Fall Horror-Movie Season! Nothing this week since I'm away, but I did watch two more last week, and have some thoughts:
- Crimson Peak: Well, this movie as a hot mess. But, y'know, some fun gothic aesthetic stuff going on, and I can't complain about Hiddlesbutt. I thought the ending was fairly meh, but I was entertained through the majority of it. I think fandom (and the fact that it's the 'twist' so often it's become cliche) had inured me to incest at this point. My reaction to it is: soooooooo?
- 10 Cloverfield Lane: LOLWUT?! 🤣 I enjoy John Goodman, so I was curious about this, even though I'm not a fan of survivalist bullshit, post-apocalypse, OR J.J. Abrams. And I was a bit wary of the blurb sounding a bit like 'Misery in reverse, but with possible creepy rapist vibes if a women is the victim', and that last one fortunately enough wasn't too big an issue. I did enjoy the whole 'trapped in the bunker, is John Goodman completely crazy and gaslighting everyone or not?' bits. There was some decent suspense and mystery there. And I did have the thought at one point, 'If I was writing crack!fic about this, she'd get out and there'd TOTALLY be aliens!' I...did not expect that to be the actual twist. 😝 Like, I figure most people have more sense than me, but then this is J.J. Abrams, ye great master of bullshit nonsense. So, uh, yeah. That was a thing they did, where they grafted a movie with COMPLETELY different tone and aesthetic onto the last ten minutes. Which, I guess, was a choice? I feel like there were two potentially decent movies here, but they did not successfully mesh. So, yeah, that was a thing. This week's selections were not as successful (for me) as last week's, for sure!

September word count: September has ended, and through the end of September I wrote 216k! I am pretty on track to get 250k by end of year. I have 83 works published de-anon at this point (although quite a few not yet revealed.)

Goals for this week: 1) Hiking trip, vacation, wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee! 😊 2) Finish reading Tomb of Dragons. 3) Maybe read some other stuff if I have time.

A much needed R&R rotation garners a visitor eager to meet the other parts of her daddy's life.

K-7 Surprise

The U.S.S. Enterprise limped into Deep Space Station K-7's orbit, glad that no Klingon ships were in sight. They had a lot of scientific data to upload, needed time in friendly space to effect repairs, and would spend some time revising the data from their battle with the unknown vessels to forward to Starfleet Command.

Right now, though, Captain James T. Kirk intended to see that all of his crew took at least a full day of leisure aboard the station. He had gone over the roster with Bones, scheduling the away parties with an eye to who needed the down time fastest, and who needed specific crewmen to go with them. Spock had added a few tweaks to the rosters on his own, showing deep insight to the needs of the science personnel.

Bones had even nodded, with a wave for Jim to listen, because that bunch was almost as insular and workaholic as Scotty's engineers.

Scotty showed up on the bridge just as the good doctor was counter-signing the rosters, and his face was set in purposeful glares at the CMO, Captain, and First Officer.

"The three of ye, off the ship on the first rotation, aye?" he demanded.

Spock opened his mouth, closed it, arched an eye brow, then nodded. "Logical. If we go first, we will be back in time to allow you your time away, and then true repairs can begin without anything interrupting you as all of us will be back on duty."

"Annotated and amended in the report," Jim said, smiling as his chief engineer proved as wedded to the ship as he was. "Well, gentlemen, shall we?"

"We shall," Bones agreed, grinning at Scotty a moment before the trio made their way to quarters to gather their away bags.

Bones was discussing with Spock about the effectiveness of various types of scheduling for different crew needs. Jim supposed to outsiders it looked like arguing, but he could tell his friends were practicing their own version of relaxation from stress. That meant it was Jim who spotted the woman turning their way, her face lighting up, and he placed that dimpling smile against pictures in Bones' quarters.

"Gentlemen, we have company coming," he said, breaking the give-and-take of conversation so that both looked, and then it was Bones with matching dimples to the young woman.

"Joanna!" Bones cried out with joy, and then the pair were hugging with the intensity of people who only rarely got to see one another.

"When the leader of my project found out your ship was incoming, she insisted I take some time off and come up!"

"Up? You didn't tell me Sherman's Planet was your residency project!" Bones said, while placing a hand at the small of her back to guide her to a table.

"You two come sit with us," Joanna said firmly. "I want to actually talk to the two men Daddy has filled his comms with."

Spock's look was a study in Vulcan-not-being-smug-and-curious, while Jim bet his own let a little surprise show.

"Does he now?" Jim twitted, as Bones reached up to rub the back of his neck.

"Well, I see more of you and our resident pointy-eared hobgoblin than just about anyone other than Christine!"

"Statistically speaking, I find that highly improbable," Spock said, "but I am interested in making your acquaintance, Miss McCoy."

"If you would, call me Joanne; I get Miss McCoy'd all day by the colony children taking my first aid course."

"A worthwhile subject to teach." Spock glanced, briefly, at Bones, and the doctor rolled his eyes heavenward with a knowledge of where this would go. "Likely without causing any injuries to be demonstrated on."

"One time, Joanne. One time, because someone failed to secure a storage bin, not even my doing!" Bones protested, leading to his daughter laughing and smiling. She then looked at Jim, sizing him up.

"How do you manage to put up with Daddy's ways and sayings, sir?"

Jim gave a smile. "Once I realized the gruff and pretense of good-ole country doc hid more expertise than the medical academy, I rolled with it. And it does provide unique counterpoints to my executive officer's logical ways."

"Counter-intuitive arguments, you likely meant to say, Captain," Spock said in his mildest tone.

Joanna propped her chin on her hands, watching the interplay, soaking it up as part of the happy chance of seeing her father again.

Jim glanced over the efficiency reports starting to come in from various departments, now that they were back underway. He was unsurprised to find them top-notch, given how thorough everyone had been once they had had their needed rests.

Even Spock was more… nuanced in his reports without being a stickler for the science of them. And Bones?

Jim smiled to himself. Bones was going to be walking on air for weeks, just for the sheer happiness of seeing for himself that Joanna was thriving.

It promised to make off-shift mingling with both men that mattered to him almost as much as the ship all the better for that rest.

Ficlet: Encounter at the market!

The market was colorful, lively and fun. Lyana inhaled deeply to breath in the delicious smells of fruit and recently baked bread, and marveled at every shop, every yelled offer and every pokemon helping around.

That was why she didn’t see the boy coming until she crashed into him. Both of them fell to the ground, wicker baskets knocking over and fruit rolling everywhere. And worst of all, her poor Oddish also rolled away!

“Oh, no, I’m so sorry!” she apologized and rushed to sit up and put everything inside the basket again.

“That’s okay,” the boy said. He barely had time to stand up before Lyana handed him his basket, which he accepted. “Thank you.”

“No problem, bye!” she said, grabbing her own basket and leaving.

Once the boy was out of sight she sighed. How embarrassing! At least none of them hurt themselves. But what about Oddish? She opened the basket and grabbed the little grass pokemon.

“Are you okay? Why do I never pay attention?” she asked her friend.

Oddish tilted her head and Layla blinked. Something was not right. Oddish didn’t seem like herself…

Suddenly Oddish changed and turned into a pink blob. It was a Ditto!

“Oh no, where’s my Oddish!?” she let out.

“Wait!” someone said from behind her. She turned around to face the boy from before. “That’s my Ditto. She’s kind of a prankster… come here, Ditto!”

The normal pokemon jumped to her trainer's hands, happily smiling. The boy handed Lyana his basket and she saw that her Oddish was there, thank Arceus!

“Oddish, I’m so sorry!” she hugged her pokemon tight, maybe too tight. “I never would abandon you!”

After some tears and a lot of thanks from her, the boy said goodbye and she continued her journey. She was left speechless when, the next day, she went to challenge the gym leader and found that he was the very same boy. How embarrassing! Why did those things always happen to her?

Favorites and Preferences

1. Who is your favorite character or member within your fandom, and why?
When it comes to Smallville, well, Superman has always been my favorite hero and even SV Clark had my heart early on and then Lois once she showed up. I think as I got older, I somehow got more sympathetic towards him. He's so young and tried his best, even when he made mistakes. With the MCU, it's Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson. Again, the "boy scout" characters tend to have my heart, especially when they're more complex than on paper. With my current fandom, 9-1-1, that would be Eddie Diaz. I was really drawn to him from the first episode he was in and he just kept growing on me. He's just fun and snarky and competent and such a good dad.

2. What is your favorite installment, episode, or album from your fandom?
I do like the early seasons of Smallville, specifically 3, but even though it's wacky, for a long time, 4 was my favorite. Probably because it leaned into the really weird and I kinda enjoyed the cracky moments. I don't love the doom and gloom all the time. The first half of s8 was strong and then it weakened. 9 was my favorite after that.

I don't love the handling of SHIELD but CA: TWS is probably my favorite MCU movie.

Season 3 and season 4 are tied for my favorite 9-1-1 seasons.

3. Do you have a favorite quote, lyric, or saying from your fandom?
Clark's "I stand for truth, justice, and ... other stuff" does still make me laugh, because of the delivery.

Athena's voice over in the s2 finale of 9-1-1 (I miss the voice overs), specifically, "This is how we save ourselves, by saving each other, because nobody, not anybody, has ever been saved alone."

4. What’s your favorite fan-created content (art, music, video, story) related to your fandom?
Yeah, there's no chance I can narrow it down to one or even five for any fandom. :D

5. Who is your favorite pair or group within the fandom in terms of chemistry or dynamics?
I've always been drawn to Clois in most versions of Superman and Smallville wasn't an exception. I did start writing fic for Clark/Oliver, a ship that snuck up on me and then inspired me to join fandom because barely anyone else was writing them and I figured I would give it a shot. I love a bit of a push/pull dynamic with ships so Steve/Tony after The Avengers and Sam/Bucky post CACW. With 9-1-1, it's Buck/Eddie. I actually didn't expect to ship them when I started watching the show. As much as I like friends to lovers, the best friend ships rarely appeal to me and I tend to prefer them as just friends, and my brain can be a little contradictory in general when it comes to the juggernaut, but this one really stuck.

6. Do you have a preferred genre when it comes to fan fiction or fan works in your fandom?
Probably romance/drama. I like canon level action fics (can't handle anything too violent), and while I enjoy fluff, if it is longer than a couple of thousand words, I need some sort of plot.

7. What’s your favorite piece of lore or backstory within your fandom’s universe?
With Smallville, I've read that Lois's nickname for Clark (calling him "Smallville") was an accidental slip by Erica Durance and it just stuck, which I love. I also like that it was her idea to nix the kiss in 8.15 "Infamous" and to jump on Clark after the secret reveal in 10.05 'Isis'.

When it comes to 9-1-1, the fact that Ryan Guzman and Oliver Stark seemed to have a hand in naming "Buddie" is my favorite. I wasn't in the fandom/watching back then, but I found a screencap of an old post from the official 9-1-1 account asking people if they were on "Team Buck or Team Eddie". And I think Oliver Stark must've called them "Beddie" because RG's replied, correcting it to Buddie, and OStark agreed that they can go with that. So if that was the first showing of the ship name, that's pretty great.

8. Is there a particular scene, moment, or episode that always makes you emotional or excited?
With Smallville, Clark & Ryan always gets me emotional, especially in the hot air balloon moment. There are a ton of Clois moments I love, but one of my favorites will always be the Dunk Tank scene because Clark & Lois have such good chemistry already and it's just a few episodes in. Plus she is a pro at getting him to smile, even when he tries to be annoyed with her. Even Tom Welling had said that Lois brings out a different side of Clark. It's true, she does. The Piggy Bank conversation also gets to me because she understands him so well even without knowing his secret, and isn't afraid to be firm while being sympathetic at the same time (which is something I love about her). There was also a moment toward the end of 9.04 "Echo" with Clark & Oliver talking on the balcony and the way Clark told Oliver he still believed in him was so good, even if they handled Oliver's very real suicide attempt badly. s8 was such a rough go for their relationship and I was frustrated. To see them have a moment like this in s9 really gave me hope.

In 9-1-1, all the Tsunami scenes in early season 3 get to me, especially the one where Buck is explaining to Eddie that he lost Christopher. It's so painful to watch Buck try to explain and the resignation, moving on to grieving look on Eddie's face, before Chris is found. Of course Eddie telling Buck about his will remains a top moment too.

9. What’s your preferred platform for engaging with fellow fans and content (forums, social media, etc.)?
I've always preferred journal based sites, probably because I was mostly on fandom in the peak LJ days, so I still love Dreamwidth best, but I do like Tumblr for the gifs, and it is nice to chat on Discord from time to time, even if I can't really keep up with any of the servers.

10. Can you name a favorite moment when the community came together to support the fandom or a cause?
I've seen a lot of works created for a 9-1-1 for Gaza event but I can't say I know the origins, but that was awesome. I generally think it's great when fandom does that kind of thing. Whether it's the

sunflower_auction or Marvel Trumps Hate or Fandom Trumps Hate.

11. What’s your favorite way to show your fandom pride (cosplay, apparel, tattoos, etc.)?
I don't know if I really have a way. I don't really go out searching for fandom merch, mostly because I know it will collect dust somewhere and I'm so bad about being organized already. The only time I actively went out for something was Tom Welling & Erica Durance were featured on the TV Guide cover. I still have that issue.

12. Who’s your favorite content creator, artist, or writer within the fandom, and what do you love about their work?
Fanfic is hard to narrow down, but I've enjoyed watching fanvids again once I got to 9-1-1/Buddie so a couple of vidders I like are:
